Portugal v Czech Republic

Since the Czech Republic gained independence in 1993, both teams have met once - it was in the ¼ finals of Euro 1996 when the Czech Republic won 1-0 in Birmingham courtesy of a goal by Karel Poborsky. Portugal first met Czechoslovakia in 1930 - Portugal won the friendly 1-0 in Lisbon. The last time Portugal defeated Czechoslovakia was in a World Cup qualifier in October 1984 in Porto. Both teams secured their wins in their opening game with goals in the last 30 minutes. The Czech Republic managed only one shot on target in their first match against Switzerland. The Czech Republic have kept seven clean sheets in their last eight competitive games. Cristiano Ronaldo fired off six shots (2 on target, 2 off target, 2 blocked) in the match against Turkey, more than any other player on the opening two days of the tournament.

Turkey v Switzerland

The last two matches that they played against each other were play-offs for a place at the 2006 World Cup in Germany - and the Swiss prevailed on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw. The second leg, a 4-2 win for Turkey on home soil, was marred by a off-the-field brawl following the final whistle. Middlesbrough's Turkish striker Tuncay Sanli grabbed a hat-trick in that meeting. Both teams met for the first time in June 1952 in Ankara. In this match, Switzerland managed their highest win over Turkey (5-1). The Turks have failed to find the net in only two of their last 14 competitive matches. Switzerland have only conceded one goal in their last five competitive games.

Austria v Poland

Poland have won three of their last four matches against Austria. In these four matches, Poland have managed to score at least three goals - three of these games have seen the Poles score exactly three, the other time they scored four. Their last meeting saw Poland win 3-2 courtesy of goals through Ebi Smolarek, Kamil Kosowski and Maciej Zurawski. Austria mustered 16 shots in their opening game, more than any other side in Groups A and B. Poland have now won just one of their last five games (friendlies and competitive fixtures). Poland have failed to find the net in just three of their last 16 competitive fixtures.

Germany v Croatia

These two sides have met on seven previous occasions and Germany have only suffered one defeat against their Croatian counterparts. However, this defeat came in a crucial World Cup quarter-final in France in 1998. Croatia cruised to a 3-0 win. Germany managed to win their last match against Croatia though. This came in February 2004 in Zagreb; and the Germans prevailed 2-1 - with Miroslav Klose opening the scoring and Carsten Ramelow hitting a last minute winner. Both German goals against Poland were left-footed. Croatia have now scored just one goal in each of their last four games (both competitive and friendlies). While Germany have scored exactly two goals in each of their last three games (both competitive and friendly).

Romania v Italy

Italy have won their last four matches against Romania - the last coming in November 2003, when they won 1-0. Romania have failed to score in any of their last four matches against the Italians. The last time that Romania managed to defeat Italy came back in March 1989 - winning 1-0 in a home friendly. Romania have never managed to defeat Italy outside their home nation. Roberto Donadoni and Victor Piturca faced each other as players in the 1988/89 European Cup final in Barcelona. Milan won 4-0 on the day with two goals scored by the current Netherlands manager Marco Van Basten. Italy had not conceded more than two goals in the final stage of a major tournament since the final of the 1970 World Cup. Italy have only kept one clean sheet in their last five competitive games.

Netherlands v France

These two sides met at Euro 2000, when the Dutch prevailed 3-2 in their Group D match. Their last meeting came in March 2004 when they drew 0-0 in a friendly in Rotterdam. France last managed to defeat the Dutch in February 1997. Goals from Robert Pires and Patrice Loco cancelled out a Dennis Bergkamp strike to seal a 2-1 win for the French in Paris. The biggest win in this fixture came in April 1923, when the Dutch defeated the French 8-1. The Netherlands have kept seven clean sheets in their last nine competitive outings. France have failed to score only five times in their last 21 competitive games, but three of those have come in the last six matches. France haven't conceded in their last five games in all competitions. France have won once after falling behind in their last 21 competitive games - against Spain in the last 16 of the 2006 World Cup (3-1).

Spain v Sweden

These two sides came through the same qualification group to get to Euro 2008, and on the two occasions that they met the home side won, keeping a clean sheet. (Spain 3-0 Sweden, Sweden 2-0 Spain). Both teams drew four times - but in friendlies only. The last time, Spain and Sweden met on neutral ground, was 1978 in Buenos Aires. Spain won this World Cup's group match 1-0. David Villa became only the eighth player to score a hat-trick in a European Championship finals, and the first Spaniard to do so. Spain hit 12 shots on target in their opening game, more than any other side in the opening set of fixtures. Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goal against Greece was his first for the national side since 2005.

Greece v Russia

Greece first met the USSR in a World Cup qualifier in May 1965 - a game which the Greeks lost 3-1 away from home. Russia and Greece met in the Euro 2004 group stages and the Russians managed to win 2-1 - but this was mainly due to the fact that the Greeks had already qualified for the quarter finals. This game also saw eight yellow cards being dished out. The three matches between Greece and Russia prior to this Euro 2004 game all finished in draws. Greece defeated Russia 1-0 in a World Cup qualifying match in 1993.
